For now, though, congratulations to the winners – you guys deserve it! Try not to get a sunburn while basking in the glory of your triumph.”

This weeks interview is with our good friends in Lionize. This stoner-funk, reggae, rock infused five piece has been kicking out the jams for the past few years, playing alongside such eclectic acts such as CKY and Ozomatli. This summer has them playing Warped Tour as well as the Bonnaroo festival so be sure to check them out!

1. Warped tour is one big circus. What is your plan to stay sane during the summer in another dimension?

We just plan on staying hydrated and focusing on our set. I think we’ll have an amazing time but play it kind of conservative. This band is not a huge fan of the heat.

2. Can you explain to the readers what the song “Saviour of Fontana” is about?

We have a good friend who was born in Fontana and now lives in riverside. His name is Sean Hammer. The was inspired by him but also just a non-sensical tune about nothing really. Just fantasy really. Most of our songs are like this.

3. Word around the Indie campfire is that you have some wild tour stories. Give us your favorite pg-13 to R rated recollection of some awesome adventure.

I don’t know who your source over at indiemerch is, but we would never do anything wild on tour. Unless Isaac is meeting up with us, then maybe it gets wild. We are pretty low key guys. I hate to dissapoint everyone, because this is a common question to answer, but nothing too outrageous. We did play a pig farm in iowa once. Pretty much was like it sounds. Lots of live and dead pigs covered in mud, while we played in front of the pen. Very rad.

4. Lionize had the honor of being Lee “Scratch” Perry’s backing band. How was the contrast between playing someone else’s songs and would it be something you would consider doing again?

We enjoyed doing the sets. It was a fun way to re-arrange his material and give it some heavier, more riff oriented material. We pretty much improvised everything each night as well and really grew the set into a living, breathing live dub set. We have since done several tours with him and are looking forward to the next ones.

5. How has the reception been for “Deconstruction Manual?”

Overwhelmingly awesome. We are pretty surprised so many people took a liking to it. We like it, but we never think the songs we make other people will enjoy as well. It’s cool for sure.

6. You have played with an eclectic mix of bands all over the musical spectrum. What kind of tour in terms of genre does the band feel most comfortable playing in?

I think rock and roll and punk tours are the best. Reggae can be fun, and world-music acts have great crowds as well, but there’s nothing like a beer drinking rock and roll audience.

7. How has the IndieMerch experience treated you so far?
We truly love Indiemerch. Kevin, Isaac and everyone else who’s had our backs from day one. We can’t imagine touring without there help at this point as far as merchandising goes. They’re the best. We don’t know why theyre so cool to us, but we won’t question it so hopefully it continues!

Happy St. Patty’s day! That ain’t green beer, thats toxic sludge, bud.

This weeks installment features Salt The Wound, the recently reunited Cleveland natives. Their new album “Kill The Crown” dropped on March 15th and can be ordered through their official merch store. Thanks to guitarist Jake Scott to taking the time to answer. Enjoy!

1. When/what made you guys decide to reform with the original vocalist?
JS: Kevin Schaefer and I are best friends bottom line, and when Salt the Wound put out Ares I loved the album, but it just didn’t have the same chemistry as our debut full length Carnal Repercussions. After a year off and clearing my head I decided it had to be done, we had to make a new album for our fans that stood with us over all the years and deserved another record. Kevin agreed and work began.

2. What can your fans expect from “Kill the Crown” and how does it compare to “Carnal Repercussions” and “Ares?”
JS: Our fans can expect a far more mature and well written album to both our previous full lengths. We left behind the more experimental sound of Ares and returned to our really tailored sound we created for Carnal Repercussions. Overall the production is far superior as well, everyone who worked on this record really nailed it. Producer Brian White and engineer Cole Martinez took us to the next level.

3. Cleveland seems to be a hotbed for all things awesome. IndieMerch and the band itself is from the forest city. Is it something in the water?
JS: I would definitely say Cleveland has something good going on, there are alot of great resources for band’s here, Indiemerch, Jak Prints, Peabody’s Downunder, Conquistador Studios, and Empire Recordings all based in down town Clevlenad have been HUGE assets to our band.

4. People call Lebron “King James” and recently ditched your city to take his talents to Miami. Your new album is called “Kill The Crown.” Any subliminal messaging there?
JS: Not at all, some of the guys are basketball fans but we had the album title chosen long before that traitor chose to stab Cleveland in the back.

5. Any touring plans this year?
JS: We currently are sifting through some offers and should have some exciting news to post soon.

6. What are your some of your favorite designs past or present that have appeared in your IndieMerch store?
I would have to say the “Safari” t-shirt was one of my favorites ever, Chad Lenjer really captured all of our faces perfectly in our jumanji inspired t-shirt.

A more recent design I absolutely love is “The Long Climb”, for the last 5 or 6 years I’ve wanted to make a long sleeve t-shirt and just never seemed to get around to it so finally we got to put one together that I’m super proud of.

7. What have you been listening to lately?
JS: Lately I’ve been listening to the new Kanye West album on repeat, Juicy J, and Waka Flocka Flames.

8. Soapbox is yours: any parting words/shoutouts, its all you.
JS: I would just like to say thank you to Indiemerch for all the years of support and everyone check out our new album KILL THE CROWN! In stores now!

Happy Tuesday! Welcome to the first installment of my weekly interviews on the IndieMerch blog. First up we have Darkest Hour, D.C.’s finest since the Bad Brains were banned from their fair city. DH has been tearing up the metal circuit for fifteen years and their latest album “The Human Romance” is a true testament to their storied career.

Special thanks to guitarist Mike Schleibaum for taking the time to sit down with these questions and their manager Mike Mowery of Outerloop Management for making it happen.

1. The band has a penchant for making albums with no filler. “The Human Romance” is no exception. Is there a lot of music left on the cutting room floor or do you guys have a firm grasp of what will be on the record before you go into the studio?
MS: Well, all the music starts as guitar riffs mainly. So there are no shortage of those. We always have plenty of material lying around what we like to call the “riff farm.” But you never know when those ideas will become songs. Sometimes we have hung onto ideas for years before they actually make a record. Actually, the intro of the record was around from The Eternal Return it just wasn’t right for that record. But full songs…we have few if any of those around. There is however a bonus track, a song called “Ripe in a Rotten Age.” It only exists as a preproduction track but it is the only song that made it to preproduction that wasn’t recorded for this record. I think it will surface in Japan but all you net geeks will find it for sure.
2. Based on the “making of” videos there appeared to be a relaxed yet focused vibe in the studio. Was there a different approach to this record or was it business as usual?
MS: Well we definitely spent a lot more time grinding out the songs and working on the details before hand. This was probably the most finished record we ever started recording. We demo’ed everything (which we had done in the past) but this time the songs took shape along the way as well. The final product you hear was actually a journey of sorts as it kind of developed along the way.

3. The Atticus Metal Tour III recently kicked off at 9:30 club in Washington D.C., how was the response from the home crowd for your record release show?
MS: Amazing, DC always does it right! We have a blast rocking there and cant wait to go back. Man there are so many clubs in the world but the 930 has to rate in the top 10. We love that club and playing that city for sure.

4. Is it difficult to blend new material with older songs for your setlists? What can fans expect on the Atticus tour?
MS:Yeah picking a set list for this tour was hard but I think we have a good mix here. We are playing some new songs and some songs from the older records as well. Fans can expect that we’ll start playing more new tunes soon….we’re gonna rip all these jams live!

5. How has the IndieMerch experience been for you guys so far?
MS: Amazing we love the guys over there and the print quality is amazing. We have been with a few “merch companies” but these guys know their shit! Trust me when you order from IndieMerch you are getting quality printing and merchandise from some cool ass dudes! There a true “small american business” so buy some shit from em, what could be more American then that?
6. What is your all time favorite shirt design you have sold at the merch table?
MS: Damn thats a hard question. We have had so many designs in the past its amazing, I wish I had saved one of each now cause it would be an amazing spread. I think my favorite designs are either some of the new ones based on The Human Romance cover or the shirts we did based off of Deliver Us. To be honest I like designs themed to records and those just have great themes. Oh and there was this Van Halen rip off shirt that I loved, but yeah the new shit looks dope…The Human Romance hoodie…I wish I could wear our own merch but we’re just not those dudes!

Be sure to catch Darkest Hour on the remaining dates of the “Atticus Metal Tour” and their appearance at the IndieMerch sponsored “California Metalfest” on March 19th. Check the flyers below for more details.
